Social Media In Property: Developing Property – A Journey

This week we have a very special week of blogs from  just one guest blogger.

We have had some fantastic guests.Today I would like to introduce you to Lee Smallwood. Lee was one of the first people I met on Twitter, and the one who encouraged me to set up this blog. ( Boy, what a find!)

His help and advice have been invaluable to me over the past months. He is one of the few people that really ‘gets’ social media marketing and can find an angle to make it work for any business. (He’s a top chap and curry fanatic too!)

Developing Property – A  Journey

When I lived with my parents – many years ago(!) – my Dad used to develop property. We used to live in caravans whilst he did them up in his evenings and spare time – then when finished – we’d move in… for about 6 months then they’d sell it and then buy another one to ‘do up’.

He always used to take pictures and put them into photo albums and write up about the room or whatever the picture was about.

This kind of content is perfect for search engines. You’d have original content, it would be interesting and would help add additional visibility to your portfolio.

So back to today and carrying on from yesterday’s post ‘Taking care of Housekeeping’, I thought there’s no better way of showing something than to base it on a worked example.

So I’ve created a free WordPress blog called www.developingproperty.wordpress.comand for the remainder of these posts this is what I’ll use for an example.

Firstly, I wanted to incorporate a popular keyword in within the title of the blog, this helps a lot with creating visibility online – but if you are your brand, I would suggest using your name. So, if you haven’t already, go over to WordPress.com and get yourself a site ;) … then come back. These posts won’t include lessons on WordPress – this link http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page will help you with that.

Starting at the end – WordPress Pages

Within the ‘developingproperty.wordpress.com’, you’ll see that I’ve created a ‘Page’ next to the ‘About’ called <Property Details 1 – Including Address>. You can have as many pages as you like. But use them to describe the ‘finished product’ if you like images etc. If you haven’t finished the property yet think about the putting the plans up or how the property used to look.

I’ve also added an image to it, you can add as many as you like but right click on it (if you’re on a PC) or control click (if you’re on a MAC) and view the image properties. You’ll see that I’ve included the details within the image file name ‘developing_property_address_postcode_price.jpg’ – you should do the same with your images. I’ve also given the image ‘Alternative Text’ or ‘Alt Text’ – again describing the property and finally a caption that again describes the property. You should do the same.

Along the way – WordPress Posts

Posts, or blog posts are a great way to describe your daily activities working on property and really capture ‘the journey’ of property developing. This kind of content is so valuable, not only is it unique but shows a future buyer, the steps it took to get their home to the standard it’s now in. Or for future investing opportunities it stands as a living record of your achievements and can support future investment opportunities – maybe Joint Ventures perhaps.

…And finally, just for today ;)

You can go into as much or as little detail as you want – it’s your property, but I’d suggest the more the better. Think about writing how you select a kitchen for Property X or how you decided you wanted to use a different Eco Heating system in Property Y…

Tomorrow I’ll take you through how to start using other online tools to increase your projects visibility.

Editors Note

Another great tip that we have used to our advantage is to video the development as you go along and explain what you are doing and why. If you plan to rent it when its done then you could also explain the features / house rules / local points of interest, and maps of the area etc too. Fantastic step-by-step approach from Lee.
