Design Week: Curvy Modular Kitchen Concepts

This week I am bringing together a whole host of designers to give you their ideas on design issues. Many of these folks are my Twitter buddies who I have met recently at Surface Design Show and Ecobuild. Today I’m filling in for one of our design bloggers that has had to drop out due to illness.
For a while now Ive been fascinated with the concept of both wavy and circular kitchens. This trend seems to be coming more and more main strem every day.

Tastes are changing. Whilst perusing B&Q the other day (yes I am that person!)I noticed again the wavy fronted designs on offer. I believe this is a small step to introducing a more curvaceous design concept into the mind set and pockets of the general public.

Personally I love the wavy fronted designs and curved edging. Anyone who has walked past an island unit carrying a tray and bashed their hip along the way will probably feel the same!

Modular Kitchens

Most designers will know of the modular kitchens pictured here. These are an amazing concept that were invented for space saving in smaller apartments. As with many design features the Italians are leading the way in curvy features.

Where space is at a premium in the ever decreasing flats and apartmrnt sizes, more and more clever ideas are coming to the fore. When researching for this blog I came across countless modular designs on offer.

Circular kitchen features:

The German company CC Concepts I believe invented the fully circular kitchen. This circular wooden kitchen has a basic rear wall, electrical installation with a fuse box, power and water supply installation kit,  a lighting set, round stainless steel sink, chrome single lever mixer, drawers, power-dock vertical and railing system in stainless steel.

The top and bottom of the two sections rotate individually. All wires and plumbing etc go down the centre post in flexi pipe. They have a video here showing how the kitchen works in practice.

Visit the CC Concepts website here. However, there is also the ‘fully loaded’ version which includes all appliances- in fact everything including the kitchen sink! ;-) Amazing ideas.

Space Age?

And, if this does not go far enough for you, how about the fully round Sheer Spherical Kitchen? This kitchen is completely self-contained and low maintenance. Some of you may already have a chance to admire it for its unusual design at the various design shows.

Although I do feel they cheated somewhat as there is a sizeable wall section along with the egg module. Still its design features are very clever.

So, in summary if you fancy a change, why not think of something a little out of the ordinary, go on- get a few curves in your life!

Must admit that curvy kitchens do absolutely nothing for me. Smooth edges yes, but circles and curves noooo. Too 1970s for me

    It’s a great kitchen.

Curves are great but designers using Kitchen CAD Software will often find it very difficult to create bespoke curved units. It would be a shame if this puts them off.

True. Nice to see some designers for kitchens can still be innovative though with rounded designs. Interestingly, since I wrote this blog, rounded corners have crept into designs within the mass market. Maybe the trend is changing….? Im not sure what you mean by ‘this putting them off’-do you mean the use of CAD to design with?

I just think there is often the idea that if the CAD system can’t do it then I won’t put it in, which is a shame. I agree about the spread of curved units though even B&Q have them now!

ah yes, I see. That speaks more about lazy designers though eh? ;-) Curves are often more appealing to live with than angles and hard lines. Most modern home design seems to forget about detailing and pair all things back. Not very imaginative really.
